Monday, March 9, 2009 FAA Security breach affects 45,000
A computer breach at the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) has led to the theft of personal information on more than 45,000 employees and retirees, the agency confirmed this week. All told, the FAA said the hackers hijacked 48 files, two containing sensitive personal information that could expose the employees and retirees to identity theft. Two of the 48 files on the breached computer server contained personal information about more than 45,000 FAA employees and retirees who were on the FAA’s rolls as of the first week of February 2006. The server that was accessed was not connected to the operation of the air traffic control system or any other FAA operational system, and the FAA has no indication those systems have been compromised in any way. Appropriate law enforcement agencies have been notified and are investigating the data theft. FCW reports that the FAA was doing such a good job at protecting data in its computer systems that the Office of Management and Budget chose it to be one of four agencies to guide other federal agencies in their cyber-security efforts.
‘Women Fly’ to be at EAA AirVenture 2009
Many of the world’s top air show performers have confirmed that they will participate at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2009, July 27 to August 2 at Wittman Regional Airport, EAA spokesman Dick Knapinski said on Dec. 30. Among the early confirmations are more than a dozen women who will participate in special “Women Fly” air show activities on July 31 and August 2. Other invited performers include those with Canadian ties or aircraft to honor 100 years of aviation in Canada, Knapinski said. In addition, second-generation air show standouts Matt Younkin and Kyle Franklin will be there, as will the Red Bull aerobatic helicopter, which made “a spectacular debut at Oshkosh in 2008,” Knapinski said. Favorites such as Sean D. Tucker, Mike Goulian, the AeroShell Aerobatic Team, and the Warbird Spectaculars will be part of the schedule as well, he said. Performance schedules will be finalized in the weeks prior to AirVenture and can be seen at www.airventure.org. By Tom Norton · December 30, 2008
